@Paul_Anderson: Will the sulfuric acid harm diamonds?

A. Hi Stela. Paul's posting was from nearly 14 years ago and then he probably won't reply, only diamonds are highly acid resistant. The bigger issue may be that concentrated sulfuric acrid doesn't belong in homes (if that is your situation). The standard arroyo is probably having the rhodium mechanically abraded away by a jeweler. Any reasons suggesting against it in your case? Cheers.

Q. I have recently been lucky enough to find a very expensive collectors wristwatch on sale for a very proficient price. Needless to say, I bought it even though information technology was cased in 18K yellowish gold instead of platinum, which I would accept preferred.

I am now because having the instance, crown and buckle (all solid 18K gilt) rhodium plated, so as to get a like look to the platinum example. As I am hesitant, my watchmaker has told me that rhodium plating is reversible, and that one can simply reverse the polarity on the bathroom and have the rhodium come off without attacking the 18K yellow gold underneath.

So at this stage I accept a few questions (please bear with me):

one) Is rhodium plating indeed reversible? (By electrical means, not past mechanical ones such as polishing).

ii) If it is, and if I decide to eventually have it off, will the yellowish aureate underneath be affected at all by the non-mechanical removal process?

3) Tin can the rhodium plating exist applied without having to smoothen the example beforehand? As each polishing operation makes the edges less abrupt, I would prefer to live with the few scratches the sentry currently has rather than having to polish the case.

4) Would a rhodium plating applied straight over a gilded surface with the regular tiny scratches given by regular wear look odd?

5) Given the difficulty of disassembling and reassembling a complicated wristwatch, what would be considered a sufficiently thick coating to ensure a decade or so of more or less regular article of clothing (or is such a thing even possible, given the thickness which might exist involved and the fact that a watch case does have to respect certain fine tolerances)?

Thank yous very much for any low-cal you can shed on this field of study!

A. If your watchmaker has a formula for electro-stripping rhodium from 18K gold without harm to the gold surface I would be surprised and interested in knowing more about this formula. Maybe he can demonstrate this bit of magic on a piece of scrap gold? You are smart to exist careful and I believe you volition regret plating your fine gold watch.

A. How-do-you-do Bruno,

Rhodium is not mostly reversed by electric means unless it is thin and has a nickel plating underneath it. The nickel layer can exist attacked and the rhodium and nickel will dissever from the primary substrate. You can carefully remove the rhodium mechanically using sandpaper sticks of variable dust sizes. Rhodium plating should non be reapplied unless the surface is re-polished and cleaned. All contaminants must be removed. The electroplating process does not conceal scratches or surface blemishes. Rhodium plating in pore free thicknesses of 4-half-dozen microns combined with a proper pre-plate over the white gold will final easily six-10 years. Rhodium plating tin can be made very hard and scratch resistant. Plating a lookout properly is time consuming merely with the proper methods, a fine watch such equally yours can be restored to a pleasing and durable end. In general avoid jewelry stores, they are nice people, but rarely have the plating processes or methods for plating in the thicknesses y'all volition need for your watch.

Good luck!

iv to vi microns of rhodium seems unlikely from any conventional aqueous solution because of stress in the deposit. What kind of bathroom are you using and does the surface remain bright at this thickness?

How-do-you-do Neil,

I meant a total of ii-4 microns total plated deposit including a preplate, of which about 1.5-2.0 microns is Rhodium. If the lookout man surface is a brush satin end the rhodium can exist made a little heavier. Thank you for the opportunity for clarification.

Q. I have a 14K gilt nuptials ring set, that is ix years sometime. I have heard about Rhodium plating and am considering doing this with my set. Is this a skilful idea? I get to a very reputable jeweler and trust them fully. Is this reversible and will information technology practice whatsoever damage to my wedding ceremony band set if I cull to Rhodium plate and then in a few years make up one's mind to go back to yellow gilded? I actually like the await of "platinum" or "white" gold, so wondered if the Rhodium plating is a good pick or not?

A. Hi Jodi...
There is no damage in Rhodium plating the wedding ceremony band. There will exist no loss when you are plating the bands as you will exist calculation metallic to the surface of the bands. As for removing the plating a few years later yous need not bother as the plating may itself wearable off showing the original colour yellow.
So become alee, bask the white colour. Regards,

I don't agree with you cousin Prakash. I think this is a poor idea because rhodium plating is very thin and rings are very high habiliment items. The wedding prepare will not look good for long at all as the rhodium quickly wears off the bottom merely but very slowly wears off the height. Don't do information technology.

Although your question is slightly dissimilar from the ones that proceeded it, considering your bracelets are silverish rather than gold, it'south actually the same problem: you can't chemically remove rhodium because it's as resistant or more resistant to all chemicals.

Q. I recently took my hymeneals set up in to have the band repaired. When I dropped it off it was a very stake yellowish gold. When I got it back it is bright white considering they "re-dipped" information technology for me for free. Now they are offer to either redo information technology in yellowish gold or get out it white. I specifically cull it for the pale yellow color.

I've read some of the other posts and saw that the only way to remove the plating is to polish it off. Does this affect the original finish of the ring? I actually don't want it the bright xanthous they are offering but if I cull this, will this plating wear off like the rhodium plating?

You need to tell him what you want and let him work out the details. Just I think y'all should tell him you'd prefer that the plating be removed rather than add nevertheless another layer. It'due south only millionths of an inch thick and won't affect the ring if washed properly.

The jeweler says "well that is the best nosotros can practice." Can it be done? There are petty places in the links that stay yellow and it has a yellow hue to information technology. How to remove rhodium from eighteen KT yellow Gold diamond jewelry?

March one, 2015 -- this entry appended to this thread by editor in lieu of spawning a duplicative thread

Q. Please bear with us, lengthy question of grade.

I accept a lot of 18 KT yellowish gold finished products, in which an option is requested past the client where the practical rhodium has to be removed from the surface. Nosotros tried removing the rhodium using white cloth buff, we were able to remove nearly of the rhodium, some small traces are left behind, farther to that we couldnt remove the rhodium nowadays underneath the diamonds.

We got the post-obit suggestions:

1. To treat the product with Nitric acid of 1.2hg at twoscore °C (104 °F)

two. or Treat the production with hot sulphur solution to remove the rhodium.

We know that nowhere this would workout, still we need your advice guys.

A. Hi Prasanna. David Vinson says to a higher place that if there is a layer of nickel plating between the gold and the rhodium, yous may exist able to attack it ... and I presume that is where hot strong nitric acid would be applicable.

Paul Anderson says the rhodium can exist removed cathodically in concentrated sulphuric acrid, but so far nobody has commented with additional particular.

A. Hi Ana. It's only possible to make wild guesses with such limited info. But there's car wax and and then at that place's 'car wax', which could range all the style upwards to an annoying rubbing compound which might be able to reduce or remove the rhodium plating on your band. Usually it's an inexpensive thing $25-50 to get it replated.

Q. Hullo! This thread was really helpful. I take a gold vintage diamond band. The jeweler was adding some gold to thicken the base of the band which had wore down from article of clothing. He also plated or dipped the ring in gilt.

It looks like a new ring and I hate it. The gold doesn't even expect like the aforementioned shade. Is this reversible? And do you know anyone that tin can exercise this piece of work for me? I am not a professional and would desire someone with more feel to work on this.

A. Hi Beth. "Gold coloring" or "Color gilding" is an fine art grade that some people have spent a lifetime working on. Apr 2017

A. Hi once again. You previously said that the buildup was necessary because the ring had worn down. I am not a jeweler but I doubtable due south/he did not melt down and recast the whole band, but that the build upwardly was done with some sort of silver solder which is a unlike color than the golden of your ring and must be plated.

Merely if the metal you want removed is a unlike metallic than the metal which you want to retain, tin can chemical stripping be an answer: stripping chemicals cannot read minds and remove only what you don't want and exit in place all of what you do want :-)

But it may be possible to mechanically abrade (polish abroad) what you lot don't want. Once again, short of melting and recasting the entire ring though, there was probably no way to build information technology up without changing the color such that replating was a necessary office of the repair process. So it'south not a thing of avoiding plating, it'southward a matter of plating it in the color which y'all prefer.

Q. I bought an 14K white aureate eternity band that has dissimilar shaped gems in "prong" settings. After wearing daily there are spots on the prongs and in between the prongs where the white is gone and yellow gold shows through. Was this originally a yellow gold ring that was rhodium plated to appear white? How can I brand it but xanthous again because I don't run across how this white blanket could be polished off … way too many tiny spaces in betwixt the prongs and re-plating is a waste of coin because it's going to just keep wearing off.

Chi Chi Faria
- Hyannis Massachusetts U.s.
^

June 2018

Hello Chi Chi. When you buy a 'white golden' ring, the gold underneath the rhodium plating is supposed to be a tolerable shade of white so the contrast is not ugly equally the plating wears abroad. However, sure, it'south possible that the ring is actually yellowish gold. But it'southward complicated: maybe the ring is white aureate and the prongs are yellow; or it'south yellow but a argent solder was used on the prongs.

You could have a proficient jeweler polish away the plating and run across what yous've got (hopefully a nice yellow gilded throughout), merely unfortunately I dubiety that a reader can confidently predict what will be found under the plating.

Recyclable Contumely

Feb 21, 2020

Q. Hello All,

I work as Jewellery designer from the past 8 years, and last year I had start my research to find sustainable solutions for costume Jewellery.

For a long time I've had the understanding that after Brass earring has the plating of 0.05 micron and East-coating information technology is impossible to recycle, such as re- plating (only if is Im. rhodium), melt or add together new soldering points.

Is this accented truthful? Or there is a fashion to remove the plating and blanket to exist able to melt the contumely, but it is expensive or very hard?

I start questioning since a few brands are advertising recyclable Brass from they quondam drove.

I would similar to add that this forum it is really helpful with full of proficient information!

Recycling rhodium plated brass earrings

February 2020

A. Hi Patricia. Eastward-coatings are organic (paint) and most tin be removed with solvents of some sort. About platings tin can be stripped from most substrates with a chemic or electrochemical procedure, just unfortunately rhodium plating is not usually one of them. Sometimes the rhodium plating has nickel plating underneath it, and in that example it may be possible to get to the nickel layer and dissolve it, undercutting the rhodium, especially when it'southward only i/20 of a micron thick. The details thing.

If the shape of the parts is simple plenty, it is possible to smoothen off the rhodium, only if y'all tin't practically reach it, you can't.

Sorry, I don't know enough about brass smelting to fully sympathise what the problems are with contagion from the plating layer, or how a smelter can remove that contagion. But I call up the chief issue here may be that brass is probably always recyclable, simply may not necessarily ever exist easily & but recastable by a home-based hobbyist. Good luck.
